Visit Schiedam

Schiedam known for its gin industry

In 1260 the 'Huis te Riviere' castle was built in the small Schie river settlement, by order of lady Aleida. In 1275 she granted this settlement privileges. Over a century later the canonized Liduina was born there. However, the city became known mainly for its gin industry. Nowadays this rich industry can be recognized by the distilleries, the 'Jenevermuseum', the tallest mills in the world, and the characteristic buildings alongside the canals.

Schiedam houses also the 'Nationaal Coöperatie Museum' and a special museum for modern art. The 'Stedelijk Museum Schiedam' owns an extensive CoBrA collection. Moreover, the gin city is also the place to be for a good meal or a drink, a night on the town, or for shopping. In the summer months, visitors can take a canal trip through the city en watch the beautiful monuments en canal bridges.
